In men's haircutting and styling our focus should be on 3 different places gentlemen. Please take note of the following info as i will keep it as succint possible. Feel free to screenshot this, and relay to your barber or stylist.
The Top
The Sides
The Back

Let's talk about options for what to do with these 3 components of your style that contribute a great deal to how you are perceived and perceive yourself.
For all (Top, Sides, and Back) you have the option to:
Buzz all the way off
Keep trimmed short
Maintain length (allows for more styling)
The average Men's haircut can be boiled down to the following statement:
"Hello Barber or Stylist, I would like some length on top and the sides and back of my hair short! Thank you so much."
Lol, if only life were so simple right?
Since haircuts are the furthest thing from binary, we can delve into the world of names;
You may have heard of the wolf cut, the mullet, rat tail, mod cut, side- part aka gentlemen's cut, pompadour, slick back, brush back, skin fade, skin taper, scissor cut, shag, mohawk, man-bun, long layers, ad infinitum.
Names, much like music genres are constantly blurred and blended. Which is why a picture is worth a thousand words.
I recommend you bring a haircut of yourself you liked in the past to your stylist. If this cannot be achieved look up a man who looks like you (similar ethnicity) and find a haircut on him you like- make any suggestions on specialization with your stylist and good luck.
